Six Basic Tips for Storing Your Gun Safely
By admin | September 8, 2011
Being a responsible gun owner includes proper storage of your firearm and ammunition. Included are six basic steps for storing your gun safely.
Always keep your gun unloaded when it is stored. This is an important rule to follow even if the gun is in a locked case.
Install a safety lock on the trigger. These are available free at most law enforcement agencies or on the internet. The kit includes a safety brochure and a cable-style gun lock.
Store the gun and ammunition separately.
Keep the gun in a locked gun cabinet. Pistols can also be stored in a gun safe. Gun cabinets can be found in all sizes and at any price range.
Always keep firearms out of the reach of children. Children are adept at finding ways to access locked cabinets and safes. Discuss gun safety with your children, but never allow them to use or even handle the guns unsupervised.
When storing pistols, remove the magazine and check for ammunition that might be left in the chamber.
Remove bolts from rifles. Store the magazine or bolt separately from the gun.
Following these basic steps can keep your family safe, and provide a good example for your children.
