Protect Your Hearing While Firing Your Gun
By admin | September 11, 2011
Whether it be for military, law enforcement, sport shooting, hunting or personal home defense, firearms handling practice is a critical part of safety and proficiency training. In the course of this training, it it important to bear in mind the need for hearing protection.
Repeated exposure to 9mm and .38 caliber handgun firing volumes on an unprotected ear can severely damage the eardrum, so larger sized handgun and rifle rounds can render even worse injury unless proactive measures are undertaken.
The basic types of hearing protection are either internal, or ear plug type products that fit in the ear canal, and external, or headphone type cups that rest over the outer ear and are joined together by an adjustable band. The Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) is the measure of sound decibel reduction that the product will deliver.
The categories can further be divided as passive or active. Passive devices simply reduce the sound levels entering the ear. Active devices, which usually require battery power, also have microphones and/or processors to enhance quiet sounds as well as offer protection from loud sounds. These are ideal for hunters, police, and others requiring unobstructed hearing and protection at the same time. Retail prices off hearing protection range from 5.00 t0 600.0 so there are levels for every budget.
